Les Witten, a reporter for syndicated colunist Jack Anderson, was arrested today long with four leaders of an American Indian demonstration that resulted in an estimated $2.3 million loss at the Bureau of Indian Affairs last November.

In addition to Whitten, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Hank Adams, Anita Collins, Alison Cerri and Daniel Pigeon. A Justice Department spokesman said all five persons were charged with receiving and possessing stolen government papers.

Miss Collins, Adams, Miss Cerri, and Pigeon are members of the American Indian Movement, which sponsored the six-day Trail of Broken Treaties demonstration at the BIA.

After the Indians left the bureau building Nov. 8, federal officials reported that $750,000 in paintings and artifacts were damaged or stolen. Officials also reported the theft of thousands of papers dealing with Indian affairs.
